Italian artist Roberto Paci Dalò belong to the innovative exponents of
the european contemporary art scene, with projects created in music,
performing arts, visual arts, and films.

Screening of the shorts: Pavel Alter's The Puppeteer (premiere),
Roberto Paci Dalò's Petroleo México, and Brian Deutzman's Hype.

The Puppeteer
New York, city of dreams… for Pavel Alter, instead, it is a grim
premise for the union of Odessa and Jeremy: two instantly magnetized
puppeteers, who interact in an alternately beautiful noir and dire
photocopy portrait of the city. His The Puppeteer, starring Sussie
Rojgaard and Danny Bouchebel, is set in an alienated Manhattan, and
explores the encounter of Odessa and Jeremy, whose drifting, seemingly
mechanically contrived fates produce a series of entwining,
disorienting vignettes. As Alter remarks, "there is no love in it."
An interpretation of the contemporary metropolis, the film follows
Odessa and Jeremy through a labyrinth of disjointed, black-and-white
scenes: a nondescript diner, the perilous shaft of an apartment flat,
a gruesome fish market, a vertiginous Laundromat. Stilted and
reverberating in their chopped-up scenarios, the puppeteers' dialogues
are brought to vivid and ultra-saturated focus, like the fated
masquerade in which Odessa and Jeremy partake: a quest for blind,
consumerist beauty.

As Alter comments, “we feel as if someone is going to be manipulated.”
Naïve and ultra-feminine as Odessa seems, we may wonder she will be
the one. But, throughout the film, her sexual identity only lingers
un-clarified, like the rest of the characters’ disjointed orchestrated
movements: a possible extension of her relationship with Jeremy.

Including themes of hallucination, reality, imprisonment and despair,
The Puppeteer is underpinned by the soundtrack of the composer Roberto
Paci Dalò, deft in his arrangement of sparse avant jazz, lush piano,
strings, vocals and ambient noise fragments, to orchestrate the film's
ever-contrasting and shifting moodscapes. As the voice of Jeremy
repeats, "this is just a show," we await, wide-eyed, the fate of
Odessa, as she barrels closer to her big-city debut.

About Pavel Alter: Alter received a degree in philosophy at the
Sorbonne in Paris, France (1994) before studying film at the New York
Film Academy (2000 – 2001), where he completed a number of short
films, including The Mermaid (2000). In addition to a script for a
feature film, Alter is currently working on creating an artist
residence at his home in Big Fresh Pond, Southampton, and a
"metro-production" to promote the work of other film and video
artists.

Il 31 ottobre 2011 riapre il Teatro Galli di Rimini. Per una notte. Com'è, dov'è: De bello Gallico - Enklave Rimini di Roberto Paci Dalò.

"De bello Gallico - Enklave Rimini" è lo spettacolo di teatro-musica creato da Roberto Paci Dalò con la compagnia Giardini Pensili appositamente per lo spazio straordinario del Teatro Galli. Un'anamorfosi scenica per voce, clavicembalo, live electronics.

Nel 1944 il teatro viene bombardato e successivamente saccheggiato. Diviene immediatamente rudere fino alla sua riconversione (negli anni Sessanta) in palestra comunale. Ora è un cantiere e lo spazio del palcoscenico una vera e propria macchina del tempo fatta di strati. Cisterne romane, mura medievali, strutture ottocentesche e interventi della ricostruzione. Sembrano trincee di guerra rifugi antiaerei. La forza di questo luogo, di queste rovine ci fa abitare in più tempi contemporaneamente.
Il palcoscenico come campo di battaglia. Evocazione di una trasfigurata opera barocca fatta di cembalo, voce ma anche sottile elettronica che si diffonde attorno al pubblico. La musica guarda a evocazioni da John Dowland ai Coil.
Un immaginario barocco inscritto nelle pieghe del contemporaneo. Attraverso il video live viene mappato lo spazio e ripopolato da soldati, ombre, reverberi, bagliori, edifici, spettatori degli anni dieci del secolo scorso. E il Tempio.

Una storia incredibile (e sconosciuta) fa da filo conduttore allo spettacolo.
Tra il 1945 e 1947 la più grande città di lingua tedesca fuori dai confini della Germania è Rimini, sulla costa nord orientale italiana. 150.000 persone vivono in "Enklave Rimini", il campo di prigionia controllato dall'esercito inglese che ospita ex soldati e ufficiali della Wermacht. Un campo molto particolare fatto di università, giornali quotidiani, orchestre sinfoniche e da ballo, club filatelici, gallerie d'arte, cinema, ospedali, tipografie, compagnie teatrali. Il primo laboratorio europeo di denazificazione.
Un insieme di campi distribuiti sulla spiaggia tra Cattolica e Cervia. Una società multiculturale dove - oltre al tedesco - si parla russo, ucraino, fiammingo, danese, romeno, polacco, ungherese, italiano, inglese.
Stampato nella Deutsche Druckerei Miramare, viene pubblicato il giornale del campo "Die Brücke". Editore e caporedattore è il Dr. Karl Kerber e ogni giorno il giornale ospita interventi dei prigionieri del campo oltre a fornire una approfondita scena geopolitica del mondo intero. Si tratta di un documento prezioso integralmente custodito presso la Biblioteca Gambalunga di Rimini.
Protesa sulla frontiera orientale in quei giorni Rimini è al centro dell'Europa. Una città per l'ottanta per cento distrutta dai bombardamenti alleati che diviene rifugio per esuli e profughi, come coloro che arrivano da Istria e Dalmazia. Una incredibile eterotopia fatta di 75.000 abitanti a monte della ferrovia e 150.000 a mare. Forse un'evocazione di ciò che sarebbe successo negli anni a venire.

Un cast d'eccezione con la presenza in scena di Luisa Cottifogli (collaborazioni con Quintorigo, Giovanna Marini. The Chieftains, Ivano Fossati) e Chiara Cattani (virtuosa clavicembalista). I testi delle songs sono del poeta e scrittore - nonché curatore dell'opera di Samuel Beckett per Einaudi - Gabriele Frasca. Lo stilista Patrizio Piscaglia (anima creativa del marchio Messagerie) ha creato i costumi. Il filmmmaker Davide Montecchi ha creato i contenuti video a partire da materiali d'archivio provenienti dall'Archivio fotografico della Biblioteca Gambalunga. Lo storico Alessandro Agnoletti ha per primo riscoperto la storia di Enklave Rimini. Il regista e compositore Roberto Paci Dalò ha creato con la compagnia Giardini Pensili oltre 35 opere di teatro-musica presentate nei principali festival e teatri in Europa, Russia, Israele, America Latina, Messico, USA e Canada.

De bello Gallico - Enklave Rimini è un progetto site-specific appositamente concepito per il Teatro Galli e per Rimini. Il lavoro verrà però successivamente ridisegnato per essere presentato in forma "cameristica" a partire dalla primavera 2012 in teatri e festival.
Il progetto proseguirà anche negli archivi di Friburgo, Stoccarda e Londra (Imperial War Museum) alla ricerca di materiali iconografici legati a Rimini e al periodo 1945-1947. Iconografia che diventerà materiale per ulteriori progetti scenici e espositivi.

Roberto Paci Dalò: Black Beauty - a Miles Davis Remix

Quattro performance che remixano in maniera sorprendente Miles Davis per creare un innovativo live set audio-video. Presented by Veneto Jazz.

L'opera è basata sull'archivio di Miles Davis dal 1968 al 1975, il cosidetto “periodo elettrico”. Le sue registrazioni sono state scandagliate estraendone frammenti che Roberto Paci Dalò ha utilizzato per creare una nuova composizione interamente permeata dal campo elettrico di Miles. Questo lavoro viene presentato in una scena costituita da immagini video elaborate in diretta e proiettata su grande scala in una serie di performance site-specific presso centrali elettriche del Veneto.


Nel 1970, Miles prese parte al festival rock dell'isola di Wight, davanti a 600.000 spettatori, e ricominciò a cercare un'occasione discografica con Jimi Hendrix con il quale aveva in più occasioni suonato privatamente. La morte di Hendrix pose purtroppo fine a questi progetti.

In questo periodo Miles decise di continuare a mantenere il contatto col pubblico anche a costo di abbandonare molte delle caratteristiche di tutta la sua musica precedente (strumenti, tecniche compositive, metodi di produzione) e molto del suo pubblico tradizionale. In altre parole, Davis aveva ben chiaro che non avrebbe potuto riconquistare l'attenzione del pubblico continuando la vena postboppistica e che doveva in qualche modo partecipare alle innovazioni che erano state portate dal rock. Questa transizione richiedeva nuovi musicisti e, per la prima volta, anche nuovi strumenti. La musica a cui era interessato gli richiedeva di utilizzare strumenti elettrici, effetti elettronici, e, in studio, registrazioni multitraccia. Dal punto di vista delle influenze valsero le frequentazioni che Miles aveva intrapreso con artisti funk e rock come Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown e Jimi Hendrix: più tardi, in On the Corner si sarebbero rivelate anche influenze di compositori moderni come Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Fu in questa atmosfera che nacquero progetti che unirono per la prima volta alla perfezione il jazz con il rock, posero le basi di un genere che sarà conosciuto semplicemente come fusion.

La Galleria Bianconi è lieta di invitare al b.night party, evento
conclusivo della stagione, che si svolgerà il 7 luglio, dalle 18.30
alle 21.30, in via Lecco 20 a Milano. Per l'occasione la Galleria
Bianconi presenta un progetto speciale che vede protagonista l'artista
Roberto Paci Dalò: Magnetica, audio visual performance basata su
un'architettura invisibile di suono e pulviscolo elettrico, che
interagisce con lo spazio circostante mediante risonanze, riverberi ed
echi, creando ambienti sonori e visivi sempre diversi. Nello spazio
della Galleria sarà inoltre presentato al pubblico il lavoro
dell'artista cinese Shihe Gao, Special Prize Arte Laguna 2010.

Roberto Paci Dalò focalizza il suo lavoro su suono e disegno
espandendoli in scultura, installazione, musica, film, teatro e
progetti collaborativi. Il suo lavoro è stato sostenuto, tra gli
altri, da John Cage e Aleksandr Sokurov. È direttore artistico del
gruppo Giardini Pensili col quale dirige e compone spettacoli di
teatro-musica e opere radiofoniche presentati internazionalmente. Un
pioniere nell'utilizzo di tecnologie digitali, presenta performance di
live media nei principali luoghi della scena elettronica
internazionale. Ha ricevuto il premio Berliner Künstlerprogramm des
DAAD ed è membro della Internationale Heiner Müller Gesellschaft di
Berlino. Pubblicazioni recenti includono il libro "Millesuoni.
Deleuze, Guattari e la musica elettronica" (Cronopio) e il disco "The
Maya Effect" (con Scanner, L'Arte dell'Ascolto). Le sue opere sono
state presentate in Europa, USA, Africa, México, Canada, America
Latina, Medio Oriente, Russia in luoghi quali Kunsthalle Wien,
Biennale di Venezia, Art First Bologna, Opera di Vienna, Ars
Electronica Linz, Fundaciò Joan Mirò Barcelona, Locarno Film Festival,
Charlottenborg Copenhagen, Galleria Civica di Modena. Vive e lavora a
Berlino e Rimini.

Shihe Gao Giovane artista di origini cinesi, dopo il diploma
all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Lu Xun la sua formazione si sviluppa in
Francia dove frequenta l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Art di Nizza e
l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs di Parigi, città dove
attualmente è artist in residence presso la Cité International des
Arts. Ha esposto in diversi spazi e gallerie in Francia, Austria e
Italia. Nel 2009 ha vince il secondo premio Fondation Cari in Francia
e nel 2010 partecipa al Premio Arte Laguna, ottenendo il Premio
Speciale della Galleria Bianconi con l'opera Arbre Fibonacci.

THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES
THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS
Two site-specific installations for Masseria Torre Coccaro and Masseria Torre Maizza
+ an audio-video architectural performance.

Opening: May 28th, 2011 at 8pm.

Two projects connected in both cases using the existing buildings. An existing place which is at the moment hidden even though is visible to everybody. This are the two Pigeon Houses set on the roofs of the Masserias. Two artifacts different one from the other and especially interesting both for aesthetic and historical reasons. A (double) artwork thought to create new usable spaces that are also ancient at the same time.

At the Masseria Torre Maizza will be produced "The Color of Pomegranates" based on a pigeon house built in a square plan. An excellent observation point that I will try to transform in a sensory space. An observation point but also a thinking space, a place to use at the same time inside and outside, private and public. A sensory space made of light, perfumes. chromatism, sounds evoking a world and a look toward the Bizantine East and the Transcaucasian.

The title is an explicit homage to the movie The Color of Pomegranates also known as Sayat - Nova. The movie is the biography of Sayat-Nova, an Armenian trobadour from XVII century and the author is one of the most extraordinay authors of last century moviemaking: Sergej Paradjanov (1924-1990)

With the opening in the ceiling the Creation of a Circle that frames the Sky. On a wall the opening of ancient slots in different shapes that will be able to isolate portions of the landscape. The "Shelves" that in ancient times housed the trained pigeons for the transport of messages, they are transformed in classifiers that contain precious materials such as oil, fabrics, plants. The crops that surround the Tower supply the materials itselfs, especially pomegranate. The floor sees a "carpet" made of especially painted tiles in which the main chromatic reference is the color Purpora to evoke the Armenian Tradition. A bench will be created to allow the rest of the voyagers, The collaboration with the artisans of the area is fundamental for the achievement of the artwork.

As Boghos Levon Zekiyan writes:
"Red colour" in the Armenian imaginary mixes with the myths of the beginning of times. In the Hymn celebrating the birth of the Vaghan, the most ancient fragment of the mytical epic chants that we have received from Armenia, Porpora appears as image and shape of the space, like an eruption from the bowels of the abyss almost like a primordial element holding the cosmic frameworks, ephipany arcana of divine genesis and palingenesis. The Sky, the Earth and the Sea are colored by Red and Her Fire Flares the Hairs, the Beard and the Eyes of the Divinely old Nascent Child. " Red" in Armenian Tzirani (literally apricot colour). Etymologically linked to the apricot while the fruit is almost a symbol of the Armenia even in the scientific name, prunus armeniaca, also for the uncommon taste and colour.(...)
Myth and Nature then concur to make "Red" the stronghold of the Armenian imaginary with many events in the arts, in the miniature, in the folklore, in the liturgy with mutual interchanges and influences with the neighboring populations and cultures and beyond (...)
The Arab Ibn- Hawkal will even write that the so-called Armenian merchandise asmaf-al armani, is unrivalled in the world (..). Is proverbial in this respect the red of the Armenian Pomegranates, "fire red" in the popular speech, of which the most burning specimens grow especially to the south and to the east of lake Sevan upo to hills of Karabagh, the ancient Artsakh. The Pomegranate, full of symbolic values since remote antiquity, in both oriental and occidental settings, was toghether with grape (even though seen most often in connection to the vivid red blood), used and processed with particular emphasis in Armenian Medieval Art"

The Artwork next to the Pigeon House of Masseria Torre Coccaro is inspired by The Conference of The Birds (Mantiqu´t- Tayr) a canonic writing of Sufi Literature written by Farid al-Din Attar in 1977 Farid al-Din Attar is considered one of the masters of medieval Iranic literature being one of the most important master of sufist literature of his times. Sufism (tasawuuf) is a speculative religious doctrine, coming from esoteric influences with an impulse first of all influenced by islamic,indian but also christian, zoroastrain and manichean practices.

At the centre of the spiritual investigation of Attar configures thetheme of the voyage of the soul from is departure from the mundane world of certainties to the pure and spiritual world of research. Protagonist of this epic, such as a real summa of the most refined and sophisticated mysticism of an Esoteric Islam, is a group of birds congregated in a conference wanted by King Salomon in the presence of the Hoopoe. An allegoric poem that describes the search of the birds (the Sufis) for the mytical Simorgh or Phoenix, that they want to elect as their Kíng (God). In the final scene the birds that have survived the voyage get close to the throne contemplating their reflections in their faces such as mirrors of the Simorgh realizing that they are one and the same thing.

The New Record Out! The Maya Effect by Paci Dalò & Scanner.

The Maya Effect is the title of the new shining record by Roberto Paci Dalò and Scanner. The english maverick electronic flaneur and the italian media cartographer have created an amazing work based on the live recording our two heroes made back in 2009. Six hypnotic tracks rich in beats and nuances. A furher step in the organic electro world. With awesome pbotographs by Maya PD Moslemany the album has been published by L'Arte dell'Ascolto label. Official release scheduled for April 13, 2011.

Il 21 marzo è la giornata mondiale della poesia.
Teatri di Vita e l’accorto e sensibile editore Luca Sossella, da poco attivo a Bologna con la sua preziosa casa editrice, hanno deciso di celebrare l’evento con una festa della poesia e della musica con il patrocinio dell’Unesco e del Comune di Bologna.

Questo sarà dunque La voce della poesia: un flusso di voci e di musiche che vedrà alternarsi in scena numerosi protagonisti a cui seguirà una vera e propria festa con un evento aggiunto a sorpresa che sarà svelato in una conferenza stampa il 18 marzo.

Quelli invitati ono artisti di confine, capaci di suggerire nuovi modi di "sentire poesia". C'è Canio Loguercio, musicista, performer, “agitatore culturale” e già finalista al Premio Recanati. E c'è Iosonouncane, originale progetto cantautoral-elettronico, in cui Jacopo Incani usa “voci vocine vocione vociacce” in canzoni che sono un'esplosione di satira psichedelica.
E ancora il poeta triestino Luigi Nacci, anche interprete, autore e regista di spettacoli teatrali e cortometraggi, e Chiara Carminati, impegnata nella delicata e divertente poesia per i bambini e dei bambini.
Il programma prosegue con tre performance-session in ardite “coppie di fatto”: Gabriele Frasca e Roberto Paci Dalò, ovvero il raffinato poeta (nonché traduttore beckettiano) che torna a Teatri di Vita tanti anni dopo la celebrata rassegna che la struttura dedicò alla poesia con la direzione di Alessandra Berardi (Riman forte era il titolo) e l’eclettico compositore elettronico, performer, videoartista e regista.
Seguiranno le esibizioni attesissime di John Giorno e Luigi Cinque, ovvero il celebre poeta sperimentale americano classe 1936 e il musicista siciliano in costante crossover tra musica popolare, jazz e moderna. Non meno interessante sarà il duo Lello Voce e Frank Nemola, ovvero il poeta del Gruppo 93, impegnato in numerosi reading e "poetry slam" e il musicista che accompagna con la sua tromba le canzoni di Vasco Rossi.
A chiudere la serata altre tre esperienze di musica della poesia, con Debora Petrina, cantautrice e pianista, vincitrice del Premio Rivelazione Indie-Pop al Mei 2009; Rapsodi Gruppo Fonografico, funambolico gruppo teatral-letterario di invenzioni verbali; e Têtes de Bois, il gruppo musicale di lavori come Avanti Pop e I riciclisti.

Culture Lab and the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University are inviting you to a series of events with Italian artist, composer and director Roberto Paci Dalò (Giardini Pensili - Rimini / Berlin), taking place between 14th and 17th February 2011. 1) Urban Compositions Workshop - 14th-16th February
In this 2.5-daysworkshop, Roberto and the participants will explore means of creating musical and video compositions using sounds and video collected from the city. The participants will learn how to use editing software, will go on soundwalks to collect sounds and video footage from Newcastle, and create sonic and visual compositions, either in groups or individually. The resulting compositions will be shown to the public in a public performance and will also be broadcasted on Culture Lab Radio.
No prior knowledge required!

· Monday 14th from 10am: lecture, tutorial, brainstorming, soundwalk and material collection, editing
· Tuesday 15th (exact times scheduled around participants availability): editing and possibly extra footage
· Wednesday 16th: final editing and public presentation at 12:00

· Radio broadcast: Thursday 17th, as part of a radio show taking place between 13:00 to 16:00

Equipment: Bring a laptop and/or recording device if you have it. Editing suites and recording devices will also be available.

2) KIRA KIRA キラ☆キラ:: Performance Night - 16th February
Performance night with Roberto and local sound-artists and musicians from the KIRA KIRA music scene (Newbridge Project) and the Culture Lab andMusic department community.

3) Lunch Bite: Sensorial Cartographies - 17th February
Roberto Paci Dalò will be presenting examples of his works created through art, cinema, sound, performing arts, radio, and media; a body of works which are often based onurban explorations and expanded cartography. Especially through sound and projection (light, video, film) Roberto's worktends to re-design (and remix) the perception of usual (and sometimes forgotten) places. From opera houses to industrial archaeologies, from radio to telecommunication systems, these projects deliberately work on media strategies, tactic, subliminal information, "sonic warfare", and memory layers. The second part of the presentation will be the screening ofAtlas of Emotion Stream. This work – originally an audio-video installation commissioned by the PAN Palazzo delle Arti Napoli 2009 – is inspired by Giuliana Bruno's book Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture, and Film.

4) Culture Lab Radio - 17th February
This radio show with Roberto will be broadcasted on Culture Lab radio. It will feature a broadcast of his work "Atlas of Emotion Stream" (also being screened at Lunch Bite), and compositions created by the Sonic Geographies workshop participants.

Bio
Roberto Paci Dalò is an Italian artist, composer and director of international recognition. A pioneer in the use of digital technologies andtelecommunication systems in art, Roberto is the director of Giardini Pensili group and Velvet Factory space (Rimini, Italy). He is a member of the Internationale Heiner Müller Gesellschaft Berlin, and recipient of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD award. His work – drawing, installations, music, film, theatre, radio, performance – has been presented throughout North and South America, Mexico, Russia, Middle East, and Europe, in such spaces as Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna Opera House, The Western Front Vancouver, Ars Electronica Linz, Fundaciò Joan Mirò Barcelona, Biennale di Venezia, Locarno Film Festival, Charlottenborg Copenhagen, ZKM Karlsruhe, SKIF Saint-Petersburg, MaerzMusik/Berliner Festspiele. He has been several times recipient of awards at Ars Electronica. Recent publications include the books “Millesuoni. Deleuze, Guattari e la musica elettronica” (2006, 2008), “Electro Scene” (in collaboration with Enrico Pitozzi, 2010), and the record "Alluro". Roberto Paci Dalò was born in Rimini and spent his childhood on the Lake Garda. He lived in Naples andRome with residencies in Vancouver. He currently lives and works in Rimini and Berlin.

Una radio valvolare degli anni Quaranta diventa un plastico.
Una città in miniatura popolata da micro personaggi che vivono tra circuiti, valvole, strutture metalliche e che rendono la città una sorta di evocazione di una scena di “Metropolis” di Fritz Lang. La radio è attiva per cui riceve frequenze instabili e fluttuanti sulle onde corte.

Un omaggio a Ulisse Aldrovandi (considerato il fondatore della storia naturale moderna) che raccolse nella sua abitazione qualcosa come 18.000 “diversità di cose naturali” e 7.000 piante essicate in quindici volumi.
Nella performance viene realizzato un dispositivo luce / suono che lavora sugli oggetti di una sala del Museo di Palazzo Poggi (sala “Museo di Ulisse Aldrovandi” da lui stesso definito “microcosmo di natura”) creando una narrazione che, attraverso tecnologie digitali, da’ visibilità (e voce) ad alcuni degli oggetti esposti nelle teche. La performance ha una durata di circa 10 minuti e viene ripetuta in loop nell’arco della Notte bianca all’interno di Artefiera.
Microcosmo di natura vuole altresì riflettere sulla straordinarietà degli archivi e dei musei – di qualsiasi tipologia e dimensione – in quanto generatori di possibilità per l’arte contemporanea. Luoghi esperiti come found objects all’interno dei quali i materiali stessi esposti diventano allo stesso tempo oggetto e soggetto della creazione artistica in una sistematica investigazione artistico-scientifica. È così che collezioni e luoghi talvolta “dimenticati” possono anche trovare nuova vita in una pratica fondamentale dell’arte di oggi quale è quella del remix.
