YE SHANGHAI

Ye Shanghai! Roberto Paci Dalò for SH Contemporary 2012

Ye Shanghai 夜上海 is a music-visual performance by Roberto Paci Dalò created for SH Contemporary 2012 and produced by Davide Quadrio in collaboration with Francesca Girelli (Arthub Asia).

The project deals with several aspects of the Shanghainese life before 1949. At the core of this work is the incredible story of the Shanghai Ghetto, formally known as the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees (無国籍難民限定地区 mukokuseki nanmin gentei chiku).
The Ghetto was an area of approximately one square mile located in the Hongkou District of Japanese-occupied Shanghai. It housed about 20,000 Jewish refugees relocated by the Japanese-issued Proclamation Concerning Restriction of Residence and Business of Stateless Refugees, after they fled from the German-occupied Europe before and during World War II.
The work is also related to the Japanese occupation of the city. Although Japan and China had fought intermittently since 1931, the occupation of Shanghai started in 1937 when the city fell during the Battle of Songhu. The Japanese forces occupied the Chinese administered parts of Shanghai outside of the International Settlement and the French Concession. The International Settlement was occupied by the Japanese on 8 December 1941 and remained occupied until Japan’s surrender in 1945.

Historical background
“From the middle of the 19th Century, Shanghai served as a focus of Jewish immigration to China. By the end of the 1930s, Sephardic Jews, Russian Jews and Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe in Shanghai amounted to over thirty thousand forming the largest community in the Far East.
From 1903 to 1949, more then fifty Jewish newspapers and magazines came out in Shanghai in English, Russian, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish. From 1939 to 1946 more then thirty German, Yiddish and Polish newspapers and magazines were published by Jewish refugees in Shanghai.” (Pan Guang)
The International Settlement of Shanghai was established by the Treaty of Nanking. Police, jurisdiction and passport control were implemented by the foreign autonomous board. Under the Unequal Treaties between China and European countries, visas were only required to book tickets departing from Europe. During the Japanese occupation started in 1937, the Shanghai harbor began to allow refugees to enter without any visa or passport. By the time most German Jews arrived, two other Jewish communities had already settled in the city: the wealthy Baghdadi Jews, including the Kadoorie and Sassoon families, and the Russian Jews. The last ones, forced to fled the Russian Empire because of the anti-Semitic pogroms fostered by the tsarist regime and the Bolshevik class warfare, had formed a Russian community in Harbin and subsequently in Shanghai.

The Project
Roberto Paci Dalo’s project will culminate with a performance based on visual and audio materials from the years between 1933 and 1949. This database, composed of historical media, will be converted into a contemporary art work based on live video projections and music.
The iconic material used as a departure for this work is 夜上海Nights of Shanghai – a song interpreted by Zhou Xuan (1918 - 1957). This hit from the 1940s will represent the aural and sonic environment of the piece. Being sampled, decomposed-recomposed, it will become a texture that will embrace the entire performance.
From the enlarged texture of this song, will gradually emerge components made out of live instrumental sounds (a small ensemble will play on the central staircase of the Shanghai Exhibition Center’s main hall), samples from archive materials (voices in English, Yiddish, Chinese, German), will recreate soundscapes from the past, along with electronics sounds.
The projected images will be selected from the archive materials (films, photographs, handwritten notes) together with nowadays shooting on location. The projections will be controlled in realtime during the performance.
This project presents also a strong connection with Italy, since many refugees heading to China were leaving from the ports of Trieste and Genoa. Those who managed to purchase tickets for the Italian Lloyd Triestino steamships, later described their luxurious journey as surreal. From the persecution in Europe to a squalid ghetto in Shanghai, that three-week cruise in between, plenty of food and entertainment, represented an unreal and dreamy rite of passage.
The project is created by Roberto Paci Dalò in collaboration with Yu Xiaolu, Zhang Yinyi, Yu Xueou, Tan Mei, Sun Mengxuan. They firstly met during a workshop by Paci Dalò at the SIVA Shanghai Institute of Visual Art in May 2012, an event hosted by ArtHub Asia and supported by Aike Gallery.
During the preparation of the project – throughout Summer 2012 – the team will work both at the ArtHub headquarter (located in the M50 art district) and at the iTOPIA Management Consulting Co. Ltd.’s space “Mid-lake Pavillion” right in the heart of the Hongqiao New Town Central Park in downtown Shanghai.

STATEMENT
The project is creation of the live music and sound environment for the Japanese silent film “Japanese Girls at the Harbor” (Minato no Nihon musume) directed by Hiroshi Shimizu, originally released in 1933.
“Japanese Girls at the Harbor” (an authentic timeless masterpiece of the Japanese cinema) was filmed in the area of Yokohama, known as an international harbour and U.S. army base. The soundscape of Yokohama combines local and foreign sounds /voices making it different from any other regions of Japan.

PURPOSE
Nowadays, there are many composers who create music for silent movies. However, it seems that they don’t have too much to say. Often these musics are oriented more like a musical concert/event than the film screening. Indeed, when you look back to the history of silent film music, it was more like a music concert. However, in fact, the attitude we watch the film it’s now different from before. It means that the music/sound composition in itself is different from music/sound composition for cinema. These states menets are two different subjects and this project will proof the difference of aforementioned two matters.
During the silent film era, there used to be a person, called Benshi, who stands next to the screen explaining the story aurally, making sound effects through the use of his/her mouths and musical instruments, and entertaining the audience. Thus the role of Benshi was very important aspect for telling the story in order to screen the cinema in Japan. However, when the sound arrived – in 1928 in Japan – lots of Benshi obviously lost their jobs because the sound cinema was covering completely their need. The aesthetics of aural realization of storytelling and sound effects were totally changed turning to realistic recorded sounds because the technology involved.
The purpose of this project is not the creation of the soundscape of the film, but also creating the particular sound effects, music, ambient sounds through the use of aural and musical instruments in a modern context through the use of new media.
In addition to this, some of the sounds used for the project are recorded in the original film shooting location at the Yokohama’a harbour. This means the over imposition of today‘'s sound from Yokohama with the images from 70 years ago creating an astonishing effect. A true time-machine feeling through “Japanese Girls at the Harbour”. Also, by creating sound and music for the film, the difference between music/sound itself and music/sound for cinema are considered comprehensively.
This film was particularly shot on location and the each shot has longer takes including wide and close. By understanding what sound and music should be accompanied to the image as a cinematic representation, the sound and music will not destroy the images, the story, and the aesthetic of the film on its own.

EVERYDAYJOHNCAGE LIVE

Roberto Paci Dalò e Leonardo Sonnoli, come contributo a Art’s Birthday
global network. Ingresso libero.

trasmesso in streaming in diretta:

frammenti e materiali legati a John Cage.

Difficile etichettare John Cage “semplicemente” come compositore.

EVERYDAYJOHNCAGE

Rimini, 1 gennaio – 31 dicembre 2012

Difficile etichettare John Cage “semplicemente” come compositore.

EVERYDAYJOHNCAGE nasce completamente indipendente e povero.

Italian artist Roberto Paci Dalò belong to the innovative exponents of
the european contemporary art scene, with projects created in music,
performing arts, visual arts, and films.

Screening of the shorts: Pavel Alter's The Puppeteer (premiere),
Roberto Paci Dalò's Petroleo México, and Brian Deutzman's Hype.

The Puppeteer
New York, city of dreams… for Pavel Alter, instead, it is a grim
premise for the union of Odessa and Jeremy: two instantly magnetized
puppeteers, who interact in an alternately beautiful noir and dire
photocopy portrait of the city. His The Puppeteer, starring Sussie
Rojgaard and Danny Bouchebel, is set in an alienated Manhattan, and
explores the encounter of Odessa and Jeremy, whose drifting, seemingly
mechanically contrived fates produce a series of entwining,
disorienting vignettes. As Alter remarks, "there is no love in it."
An interpretation of the contemporary metropolis, the film follows
Odessa and Jeremy through a labyrinth of disjointed, black-and-white
scenes: a nondescript diner, the perilous shaft of an apartment flat,
a gruesome fish market, a vertiginous Laundromat. Stilted and
reverberating in their chopped-up scenarios, the puppeteers' dialogues
are brought to vivid and ultra-saturated focus, like the fated
masquerade in which Odessa and Jeremy partake: a quest for blind,
consumerist beauty.

As Alter comments, “we feel as if someone is going to be manipulated.”
Naïve and ultra-feminine as Odessa seems, we may wonder she will be
the one. But, throughout the film, her sexual identity only lingers
un-clarified, like the rest of the characters’ disjointed orchestrated
movements: a possible extension of her relationship with Jeremy.

Including themes of hallucination, reality, imprisonment and despair,
The Puppeteer is underpinned by the soundtrack of the composer Roberto
Paci Dalò, deft in his arrangement of sparse avant jazz, lush piano,
strings, vocals and ambient noise fragments, to orchestrate the film's
ever-contrasting and shifting moodscapes. As the voice of Jeremy
repeats, "this is just a show," we await, wide-eyed, the fate of
Odessa, as she barrels closer to her big-city debut.

About Pavel Alter: Alter received a degree in philosophy at the
Sorbonne in Paris, France (1994) before studying film at the New York
Film Academy (2000 – 2001), where he completed a number of short
films, including The Mermaid (2000). In addition to a script for a
feature film, Alter is currently working on creating an artist
residence at his home in Big Fresh Pond, Southampton, and a
"metro-production" to promote the work of other film and video
artists.

Roberto Paci Dalò / Giardini Pensili: De bello Gallico - Enklave Rimini

Roberto Paci Dalò: Black Beauty - a Miles Davis Remix

Presented by Veneto Jazz.

THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES
THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS
Two site-specific installations for Masseria Torre Coccaro and Masseria Torre Maizza
+ an audio-video architectural performance.

Opening: May 28th, 2011 at 8pm.

Two projects connected in both cases using the existing buildings. An existing place which is at the moment hidden even though is visible to everybody. This are the two Pigeon Houses set on the roofs of the Masserias. Two artifacts different one from the other and especially interesting both for aesthetic and historical reasons. A (double) artwork thought to create new usable spaces that are also ancient at the same time.

At the Masseria Torre Maizza will be produced "The Color of Pomegranates" based on a pigeon house built in a square plan. An excellent observation point that I will try to transform in a sensory space. An observation point but also a thinking space, a place to use at the same time inside and outside, private and public. A sensory space made of light, perfumes. chromatism, sounds evoking a world and a look toward the Bizantine East and the Transcaucasian.

The title is an explicit homage to the movie The Color of Pomegranates also known as Sayat - Nova. The movie is the biography of Sayat-Nova, an Armenian trobadour from XVII century and the author is one of the most extraordinay authors of last century moviemaking: Sergej Paradjanov (1924-1990)

With the opening in the ceiling the Creation of a Circle that frames the Sky. On a wall the opening of ancient slots in different shapes that will be able to isolate portions of the landscape. The "Shelves" that in ancient times housed the trained pigeons for the transport of messages, they are transformed in classifiers that contain precious materials such as oil, fabrics, plants. The crops that surround the Tower supply the materials itselfs, especially pomegranate. The floor sees a "carpet" made of especially painted tiles in which the main chromatic reference is the color Purpora to evoke the Armenian Tradition. A bench will be created to allow the rest of the voyagers, The collaboration with the artisans of the area is fundamental for the achievement of the artwork.

As Boghos Levon Zekiyan writes:
"Red colour" in the Armenian imaginary mixes with the myths of the beginning of times. In the Hymn celebrating the birth of the Vaghan, the most ancient fragment of the mytical epic chants that we have received from Armenia, Porpora appears as image and shape of the space, like an eruption from the bowels of the abyss almost like a primordial element holding the cosmic frameworks, ephipany arcana of divine genesis and palingenesis. The Sky, the Earth and the Sea are colored by Red and Her Fire Flares the Hairs, the Beard and the Eyes of the Divinely old Nascent Child. " Red" in Armenian Tzirani (literally apricot colour). Etymologically linked to the apricot while the fruit is almost a symbol of the Armenia even in the scientific name, prunus armeniaca, also for the uncommon taste and colour.(...)
Myth and Nature then concur to make "Red" the stronghold of the Armenian imaginary with many events in the arts, in the miniature, in the folklore, in the liturgy with mutual interchanges and influences with the neighboring populations and cultures and beyond (...)
The Arab Ibn- Hawkal will even write that the so-called Armenian merchandise asmaf-al armani, is unrivalled in the world (..). Is proverbial in this respect the red of the Armenian Pomegranates, "fire red" in the popular speech, of which the most burning specimens grow especially to the south and to the east of lake Sevan upo to hills of Karabagh, the ancient Artsakh. The Pomegranate, full of symbolic values since remote antiquity, in both oriental and occidental settings, was toghether with grape (even though seen most often in connection to the vivid red blood), used and processed with particular emphasis in Armenian Medieval Art"
– Boghos Levon Zekiyan, "The Red in Armenia amongst Myth, Folklore, Art and religiosity. From the Hymn of Vahagn to the Armenian bolus" (1996)

The Artwork next to the Pigeon House of Masseria Torre Coccaro is inspired by The Conference of The Birds (Mantiqu´t- Tayr) a canonic writing of Sufi Literature written by Farid al-Din Attar in 1977 Farid al-Din Attar is considered one of the masters of medieval Iranic literature being one of the most important master of sufist literature of his times. Sufism (tasawuuf) is a speculative religious doctrine, coming from esoteric influences with an impulse first of all influenced by islamic, indian but also christian, zoroastrain and manichean practices.

At the centre of the spiritual investigation of Attar configures thetheme of the voyage of the soul from is departure from the mundane world of certainties to the pure and spiritual world of research. Protagonist of this epic, such as a real summa of the most refined and sophisticated mysticism of an Esoteric Islam, is a group of birds congregated in a conference wanted by King Salomon in the presence of the Hoopoe. An allegoric poem that describes the search of the birds (the Sufis) for the mytical Simorgh or Phoenix, that they want to elect as their Kíng (God). In the final scene the birds that have survived the voyage get close to the throne contemplating their reflections in their faces such as mirrors of the Simorgh realizing that they are one and the same thing.
